Chapter 10 The newspapers and media have going around talking about Chris McCandless’ death. Wayne Westerberg calls in along with Gallien, telling about their knowledge of Chris. Once the police finally locate Chris’ closest family member they call Sam McCandless in to identify Chris’ picture. Sam happens to be his half brother who hardly even knew much about Chris. After identifying that it was in fact Chris, Sam had to go to Maryland to inform his dad and Billie that their child was dead. Chapter 11 Once Walt and Billie McCandless were informed of their son’s death, they reminisce of memories with Chris and start to wonder how and why he would do this to them. This chapter particularly talks about life when Chris was younger and how his parents were always working and not around much. Chris and his younger sister, Carine, always had one another to depend on when their parents were working. Overall though, Chris had a pretty normal childhood. Chris’ grandfather, Billie’s father, was talked about as being adventurous, which is where Chris is presumed to get most his characteristics from. With different high school friends, Chris was talked about as always being the serious, stubborn type of person. No one ever suspected that Chris would cut everyone off like he did. Chapter 12 At Chris’ graduation party, he gives his dad a very expensive telescope for his upcoming birthday. Chris gave a very heartfelt speech to his dad. Within a couple days after the party, Chris left on a trip. On one travel he finds out more about his dad and the divorce between him and his ex wife. This might’ve been the main reason why Chris separated himself from his parents and grew distant from them. He liked to keep his anger and thoughts to himself, and never let anyone in on what he knew. Later, two years after Chris left, Billie recalls waking up in the middle of the night, dreaming that Chris had called out to her for help. This happened in July 1992, probably around the time that Chris was presumed dead. Chapter 13 Carine McCandless, Chris’ sister, muses over memories and pictures of Chris. She notices how Chris continually had identical expressions in the pictures. Carine and Chris were constantly together and really close as kids and when she found out about his death from her husband, it took a mental and even physical toll on her. She was devastated and says that she can hardly go a day without crying. Sam and Carine traveled to Anchorage to obtain Chris’ cremated body. Both Carine and Billie lost their appetite shortly after and each lost a few pounds. Billie weeps while looking through the pictures of Chris’ final days. She tells herself, “I just don’t understand why he had to take those kinds of chances.” Chapter 14 In the beginning when people heard about the letter Chris sent Wayne, they started to consider that Chris had been suicidal from the start. Jon Krakauer thought differently. He thought it was just a terrible accident. Krakauer goes on to explain his adventures when he was younger and one specifically when he went to Alaska. He met a girl named Kai, and it made him remember what it was like to have the feeling of intimacy with a person. After he left, he describes himself as feeling hollow and aching. Krakauer’s main adventure was climbing Devil’s Thumb. When he was climbing the side of the mountain, he reached a point where he couldn’t go up any further due to the ice and rock. He had to start going back down which really upset him that he couldn’t complete his mission that he had originally set out for.
